5 things to do when buying a home

On Behalf of | Apr 20, 2016 | Real Estate |

Buying a home is an exciting process for many. However, compared to other transactions in your life, the real estate transaction process is not always a simple one. To ensure that nothing derails your dream of homeownership, there are several things that you can do before and during the process.

1. Check your credit score. In addition to determining whether you qualify for a mortgage, your credit score will also affect how much you can spend on a home. As a result, before you apply for a mortgage, it is important to review your credit report to make sure there are no errors in it that could adversely affect your score.

2. Define what you want. In order to make it easier to compare homes and ensure that your agent does not waste your time showing you properties that are unsuitable, it is important to know beforehand exactly what you need in a home. Make a list of must-have features (e.g., extra bathroom, finished basement, garage, etc.) and share it with your agent.

3. Get preapproved. Before looking at homes, it is helpful to know how much you can truly afford. Getting preapproved from your lender can tell you this, which can significantly help you narrow down your options. Additionally, being preapproved can give you a greater chance of having your offer approved, as it shows the seller that you are financially able to buy the property.

4. Be responsive. Since real estate transactions involve many different parties, delays are an inherent part of the process. Since many delays occur because of a lack of communication between the parties, you can help minimize them by being ready to respond to requests for information or documents as soon as possible.

5. Hire an attorney. Buying a home is a complex legal transaction. To ensure that all goes smoothly and your rights are fully protected, it is helpful to have the assistance of an experienced real estate attorney. The attorneys at Mariano & Coiro, P.C. can work on your behalf to ensure that your best interests are protected at every stage of the transaction.
